Ten Important things ignored while designing a home

11.07.2024 | By Spacextended Architects

1. Giving More Importance to Aesthetics : Often a dream house is interpreted as a symbol of one’s likeness to architecture . It’s true that the architecture must reflect the character of the life style the inhabitants occupy . But at the same time compromising functionally to achieve aesthetic value would dilapidate the design substantially . Though the design essentially must embrace the sensuality of the occupants , the same must cater to the contextual , micro / macro climatic , geographical factors as decided by the Architect. As the best architects in Kerala, our priority is to seamlessly integrate aesthetics with functionality, ensuring that each design is both visually striking and resilient to its surrounding environment.

2. Storage: While we address the basic storage facilities in terms of dresses and other stuffs , mostly the general storage is much compromised. A Utility room with ample storage is a must for home which absorbs all the clutter so as to balance the home well.

3. Understanding Dimensions Through Familiar Spaces: Checking personally the dimension of the proposed home through known spaces. Having a physical presence idea of the room sizes would give the occupant a well informed space in the design. For which the client must take the pain of understanding the dimensions from a known space.

4. Design Tailored to Lifestyle & Character: The house needs to reflect the lifestyle and the character of the family in every way. So understanding the routines and programming it in terms of space is equally an important aspect. While mostly this aspect gives way to the general style or trends of a typical home.

5. Ensuring Energy Efficiency While Balancing Natural Light: Though we say the spaces needs to well lit and well ventilated , often this is not interpreted on an energy efficiency matrix . Any amount of day lighting needed in any space can be a long term contributor for energy losses.

6. Traffic Planning : Considering the movement of vehicles and its parking is most important when it comes to home designs . This would enable to handle vehicular movements and also to set an idea of how many car parks can be provided for the residence . In fact the design must roll on based on a basic traffic layout of the plot.

7. Choosing Slip-Resistant Flooring: Anti slippery flooring for areas prone to spillage of water . Though such areas are treated with Matt finish or non glossy flooring materials , it’s often advisable to use R9 -R10 for kitchens and R-11 to R 13 for washrooms / pool decks where slipping is anticipated.

8. Double Height Spaces and Long/ Large Glass Windows: Both elements demands good amount of maintenance, which imply that accessibility to such spaces are a must for easy maintenance.

9. Elderly Friendly Room and Toilet: This is a must in any room considering the old age inhabitants and some medical conditions we may undergo at some point in the life span . Along with which , a barrier free space is considered while designing like Ramps along with steps etc

10. Ignoring New Technologies: Integrating advanced technology and automations to smartphones, enabling users to monitor the status and operation of installed appliances and machinery. This connectivity enables efficient diagnosis and transforms your residence into a 'smart home'.
